The first person that comes to mind when writing about someone who has helped my career goals is my Communication professor at Northern Virginia Community College. She is an extremely out-going and amiable woman. I took her Introduction to Communication course in 2007 and the way in which she taught the class made Communication very interesting. I decided to change my major to Communication because of her. She used to tell us very funny and descriptive stories about her job working as an editor for a Japanese car company. She was always dressed very professionally, but was extremely personable to talk with. My Communication professor was always very organized and followed the course syllabus, which she printed on yellow paper so it would be easy for her students to find among their mass of other papers. Besides Introduction to Communication, I also took her Intercultural Communication and Business and Professional Communication courses. Her lectures were always so interesting because she incorporated personal stories as examples. It made it very easy for her students to learn the material. My professor was really helped me to improve my résumé, which I still use today. I really enjoyed her hands-on approach to learning. We had mock job interviews and even a group project where we got to act out scenes that would happen in another culture. When I left her Business and Professional Communication class on the last day of school, I was very sad because I wasn’t going to be able to take any more of her courses, as I was graduating from NOVA. I know for a fact if I hadn’t taken her course in 2007, my current career plans would be extremely different.
