Online Journalism/The Rise of Internet Publications

Will print media be completely unread within the next few years or will there still be people who want to obtain their news offline?

There are still people who prefer the comfort of sitting down every morning with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. Some individuals may be uncomfortable with using the computer or simply prefer reading from traditional print publications. Conversely, the interactivity that online publications allow its readers is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. The question is: Will there be enough people who prefer print publications to keep newspapers from completely shifting to online publications?

Should news organizations charge for online publications?

Many news organizations have been seriously considering charging for online content. Many people pay for print publications, so they figure, why won’t the public pay for online publications too? This will probably cause certain publications to lose readers, but will enough people pay for online publications to make it worth it for news organizations to charge for them? There have been debates that news organizations did themselves a disservice by not charging for online content in the first place. There are a few online publications, such as the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times website, that currently charge for their content and have been successful at making money.

Should all newspapers create online publication in addition to their print publications?

Most journalists would say yes to this question. Many readers will not pick up a print publication and try to read through its long stories. Instead, they like the flexibility of an online publication with its short and concise paragraphs, bullet points and links to supplemental websites. Readers also like to interact with their newspaper through the use of multimedia elements, such as pictures, videos, audio, surveys, ect. Online content can help news organizations increase revenue through the help of advertisements, as well as allow them to increase their viewership.
