Heidi Duckler's Collage Dance Theater Blends Dance with Architecture

Josephs, Susan, “Dancing in Architecture - - Meet Heidi Duckler,” Los Angeles Times, February 6, 2010

Heidi Duckler, founder of the Collage Dance Theater, incorporates architecture into her company’s performances. Architecture is “not just a backdrop but completely integrated into the whole experience of the performance,” Duckler says.

Throughout her years as an artist and performer, Duckler has artistically and kinetically explored several pieces of architecture, including churches, libraries, schools, and laundromats. “I always start each project with a concept, but otherwise nothing is pre-conceived,” she explains.

The Collage Dance Theater will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with many vibrant performances. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the company will dance at the SPF: a gallery in Culver City, Ca. Fred Sandback’s sculptures made from yarn and string inspired the performance, which is titled “Barely There.” Dancers Marissa Labog and Roberto Lambaren will incorporate the gallery scenery, created by Judit Fekete and Zoltan Pali into their performance. “We’ll be breathing life into the installation,” says Duckler, explaining that the dancers will be moving nonstop for the entire two-hour show. Additionally, Duckler is planning for a production at Los Angeles City Hall that will premiere in November.
