Opera Singer Eric Owens Enthusiastic to be Home to Sing in English

Midgette, Anne, “Bass-Baritone Eager to Sing at Home in English,” Washington Post, January 31, 2010

Opera singer, Eric Owens is glad to be back in the United States so he can sing in his native language of English. Speaking of his experience with singing in Italian and German, he says, “Even if you get really fluent, there’s always a certain amount of disconnect, because you didn’t grow up with the language. When I sing American music, it’s really satisfying to identify and connect so well with the text.”

This past fall, Owens sang in the National Symphony Orchestra’s “Messiah” and the Washington National Opera’s “Barber of Seville.” He is scheduled to perform during the “America Sings in the Nation’s Capitol” festival organized by the Vocal Arts Society this spring.

The former bass now considers himself bass-baritone. “My top has always been pretty descent,” he says, referring to the highest notes he is capable of singing.
